SU SERVE: Students Engaging in Regional Volunteer Experiences
Every year, current students, faculty and staff and encouraged to participate in a day of service during the month of April. Designated sites all around the community welcome SU volunteers as we all work together to lend a helping hand. These hours of community service are then added to the totals being collected for the month of April by the Center for Civic Engagement. In 2012, the goal was to donate 10,000 of community service during the month of April; the SU community far exceeded that goal, as the total at the end of the month was just over 17,000 hours!
This year the goal for the month of the April is 20,000 hours. SU SERVE took place on April 13, 2013. Twelve members of CCM donated their time at Elijah's Bowl, a soup kitchen in Sunbury, PA. Altogether, CCM contributed 48 hours of service toward that goal!
Everyone had a great time helping to prepare the food and setting up the seating for the people that would be coming for the hot meal that day. Students were preparing salads, chopping vegetables and working the ovens. Others helped to set up chairs and tables. Once the guests arrived, everyone either helped to serve the food, take drink orders or mingled with the people, making sure that everyone had what they needed. After the meal, the volunteers helped do the dishes, clean up the kitchen and tear down chairs and tables. It was a long morning, but a very rewarding one. CCM will no doubt be returning to Elijah's Bowl in the future to continue helping out the very appreciative staff there.
